The television tower in Thessaloniki (OTE Tower) is a 76-meter construction. It was built in the middle of the last century on a project by the architect Alexandros Anastasiadis. In 1966, people started using it for black-and-white broadcasting of the Greek television network. In 1970, the tower ensured support for the antennas of the experimental analog mobile network.
In 2005, the television tower went through the works on its reconstruction. Thus, it got a more contemporary look.
It is now used by the mobile phone operator Cosmote. This is due to the crisis, which occurred in 2010. It made the OTE management to sell their share fraction for €560 million.
Apart from its direct purpose, the OTE Tower in Thessaloniki serves as an event place. It hosts celebrations and exhibitions, arranged in the framework of the Thessaloniki International Fair.
The third floor of the tower houses the Skyline Café-Bar. The restaurant is open throughout the year, from 10:00 to 1:00. It does not stop even for a while in the truest sense of the word. The restaurant makes a full circle about the axis over a 40-minute period. The prices here are a bit higher when compared to other restaurants in the city.
An average cost of the dinner (appetizer+drink) is 15-20 EUR per person.
Buses following routes 12, 39, 58 and 78 go to the tower. The stop is called Mousia. The OTE Tower is 5 minutes walk from the White Tower.
It is impossible to miss the OTE television tower. Its unusual design sets it apart from traditional Greek houses and buildings
